From September 9th 2024 there will be a new Medical Examiner system For Wales.
Starting on September 9th, Wales will introduce a new medical examiner system to improve how deaths are reviewed and recorded. Under this system, every death that doesn’t need to be investigated by a coroner will be examined by a specially trained medical examiner. Their job is to ensure that the cause of death is accurately documented and that any concerns from families are handled swiftly and carefully.
Medical examiners will work closely with doctors and the deceased’s families, offering clarity and support during difficult times. They will double-check the medical details and make sure everything is correctly understood before the death certificate is issued. This new approach aims to bring peace of mind to families, as they will have the chance to ask questions and receive clear answers about their loved one’s death.
The system is also designed to improve the quality of healthcare. By reviewing death records more thoroughly, medical examiners can spot patterns or concerns that may help prevent future deaths. This feedback loop is seen as a positive step towards improving patient care across Wales and ensuring that lessons are learned from every death.
The introduction of this system brings Wales in line with England, which has had medical examiners for several years. It’s hoped that this new process will provide better transparency, improve the accuracy of records, and ultimately benefit both families and the healthcare system as a whole.
